In 1862 William Morris designed his very first wallpaper, inspired by the rose trellis at Red House, the home Philip Webb built for him in Bexleyheath: wooden slats with climbing roses, a few flies and beetles. The birds were drawn by Webb, not Morris.
It was not an instant success. People wanted spacious, lifelike wallpaper, and the flat, almost naive Trellis did not fit. Taste caught up, and it has been in production ever since. On the sock: a cream base with the trellis, red roses and Webb's blue birds. William Morris and Philip Webb, 'Trellis', designed 1862.
