In the kitchen garden of Kelmscott Manor, William Morris's home in Oxfordshire, thrushes slipped through the nets to steal the strawberries. The gardener wanted to chase them away. Morris drew them instead: two birds, head to head, each with a strawberry in its beak, among tulips, bluebells and curling leaves.
The fabric was made with indigo discharge printing, a slow technique Morris only mastered years later at his own works at Merton Abbey. In May 1883 he wrote to his daughter that he had spent the whole week there 'anxiously watching the first printing of the Strawberry Thief'. It became one of the most expensive fabrics Morris & Co. sold, and immediately one of the most popular.
We kept the rich indigo version: a dark blue base with the birds, strawberries and leaves knitted in. William Morris, 'Strawberry Thief', 1883.
