A wide, panoramic canvas: a sandy road winding through open heath, a horse and cart with two figures in the distance, and a single dark pine. Nothing beyond but sky. It is the emptiest and most expansive design from our collaboration with the Emile Van Doren Museum.
In 1901 coal was discovered under Belgian Limburg, and the quiet village where Van Doren lived grew into an industrial centre within decades. He watched it happen, and fought for the landscape on the Royal Commission for Monuments and Landscapes. Today a large part of that heath is protected as Hoge Kempen National Park, and the museum credits painters like Van Doren for first showing its value.
On the sock: an ochre base for the sand and dry heath, an off-white border for the sky, and the road, cart and pine in between. 'Cart on the Road', oil on canvas, 76.5 x 38 cm, collection of the Emile Van Doren Museum, Genk.
Limited edition, made in collaboration with the Emile Van Doren Museum in Genk. This is a one-off run: once it is sold out, it will not be restocked.
