Most people know Van Gogh from The Starry Night or the sunflowers. But he also had a darker, funnier side. This painting is the best proof of that: a skull with a burning cigarette between its teeth. Van Gogh made it as a student in Antwerp, probably as a joke toward his professors who asked him to study skulls. Small, dark, and unexpectedly funny.
