The Fleets drawn up for Battle – A Royal Collaboration
Discover 'The Fleets drawn up for Battle', part of an exclusive collaboration between Kunstsokken and Het Scheepvaartmuseum Amsterdam. This design is inspired by Willem van de Velde the Elder's monumental wall tapestry from 1685 – woven from his own sketches made during the Battle of Solebay in 1672.
Van de Velde was no ordinary artist, but a true 'war correspondent' who documented the sea battle as it unfolded from a Dutch ship. His sketches were later transformed into designs for imposing wall tapestries, commissioned by King Charles II himself.
Het Scheepvaartmuseum acquired these rare, royally commissioned tapestries in 2020 – the largest purchase in its history. Now we bring these 350-year-old maritime masterpieces to life on your socks, complete with historical fleets, red pennants and the characteristic rolling seas.
Wear a piece of Dutch naval history – from royal commission to your everyday sock drawer.
