Senecio

Paul Klee painted Senecio in 1922, when he worked at the Bauhaus art school in Weimar.

You’ll see a round face made up of flat planes of orange, pink, yellow and white. The eyes are not at the same height. The expression is hard to pin down: it seems to hover somewhere between calm and confusion. The official title of the painting is 'Head of an Aging Man', but the face feels both childlike and wise at the same time. There’s something about this work that stays with you. The piece is now on display at the Kunstmuseum Basel in Switzerland.
