A row of stately trees stretches across the Frisian horizon. Jan Mankes painted this work in 1915, the year he married Anne Zernike. The calm and simplicity he found in the landscape around De Knipe can be seen in every brushstroke. Mankes died of tuberculosis at just 30, but left a body of work that ranks among the finest of Dutch realism.
The painting is one of the highlights of the Museum MORE collection. Each sock was carefully developed to honour the subtle colour transitions and serene composition of the original.
