Hendrick Avercamp was the first Dutch artist to specialise in winter landscapes. He grew up in Kampen and was born deaf and mute; his contemporaries called him 'the Mute of Kampen'. What he could not put into words, he put into paintings: busy scenes full of skaters, kolf players, merchants and children, rich and poor together on the ice.
The winter of 1607-1608 was the harshest in forty years, and Avercamp was 23. On the cream-coloured sock you see exactly that: the bare tree, the figures in red and blue capes, the bustle of a frozen town.
The painting is on show in the exhibition 'Avercamp back in Kampen' at the Stedelijk Museum Kampen, from 3 October 2026 to 10 January 2027, on loan from a private collection.
Limited edition, made in collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum Kampen. This is a one-off run: once it is sold out, it will not be restocked.
